“Truthfulness comes when we push ourselves.”
The Director in The Rehearsal
These three playlets, each directed by their author from Happy Cannibals explore reactions to theatre and the motivation of those commenting. In the first play, The Rehearsal by Maya Yousif, Andrew Friedman as the Director is trying to explore Olivia (Rachel Kitts)’s acting performance as she prepares for her opening night. Part of the tension between them is exposed when, under pressure, Olivia calls the director a nepo baby. Part of the pressure on him is that his mother, presumed to be a fine actress is coming that night to see the play.
The harrowing opening line explains what Olivia is trying to convey, “When my baby died. . .” Increasingly the Director poses ever increasing, penetrating questions and intense looks claiming that it it “truth” he is looking for. He becomes very demanding with the result that she lets rip in anger and then breaks down crying. This play examines the choices made for a realistic performance.
In the second play, The Baby written and directed by Rachel Kitts, Emma (Jessica Wendy Murdoch) is voicing her reaction to Maisie (Francesca D’Souza)’s play and Emma is questioning her reaction. It is Maisie who after all the congratulations and insincere praise asks Emma and Ben (Anthony Nyro) to tell her what they think the play is really about. Cue the conflict of their thoughts with hers! Plays one and two are peopled with characters who knew each other at university.
In the final play The Thing written and directed by Jessica Wendy Murdoch two audience members dissect what they have just seen. These two amateur critics Linda (Ella Blackburn) and Ralph (Jacob Freda) bring much comment on the tenth anniversary of their awful marriage and how they thought it should be celebrated or not. This play illustrates that what each audience member brings to the theatre is often more pertinent than the content of what they have seen. This final play becomes increasingly argumentative as each becomes more irritated with the other.
All three plays make for an excellent reflection on the nature of theatre and each is well written, directed and acted with aplomb. Just maybe don’t go and see it to celebrate an important anniversary!
