As you might expect there are many different one-man comedy shows at the Fringe; often the stand outs are those that offer something different. Olly Hawes’ F**cking Legend is one of these. A one man show at the Pleasance Courtyard Bunker. this contains some interesting ideas that sets it apart.
It is a story of a man who wakes up in the morning and looks at his well-organised sock drawer. Editor’s Note: She has never met a man with a well-organised sock drawer and remembers a survey of men in Cosmopolitan in the 1970s asking what was the one thing men wanted their women to do more of? Pairing socks was the answer. So this is a jolly good starting joke!
The Man is going to the airport to go to a stag do, he is excited being with his mates, there is the prospect of drinking and drugs and maybe he’ll score with a woman this time. He’s been to quite a few stag does and has a few more in his diary.
As the story unfolds Olly explains the thoughts of the Man, his life and uncertainties and his approach to women. He is in a steady relationship with children, but he dreams of uncomplicated submissive sex. In his dreams he is a lad, a macho man and sex god but who probably uses chemicals to complete the sex act.

What Olly does do is to keep the audience on edge. Suddenly, without any provocation, he seizes on an audience member and aggressively challenges him. Then says it’s a joke but we’re not sure and find it unsettling but exciting.
The story continues: after consummating the act with a woman at the stag do, he is racked with guilt. Did she really want it? Could she be pregnant? . . . What was her name? He starts to think about his life, the world and what his child might find when he is gone, or . . . is he having a bad trip?
All of this might sound a bit excessive dealing with the subject matter but it is a credit to Olly that he takes it all in his stride. This is an entertaining, confronting, experience and I cannot help but recommend it. F**cking Legend gains five Fringe Festival Stars (FFS) from Theatrevibe the site that doesn’t do stars!
