Sitting here relistening Annie Lennox’s album Diva I understand why drag artist Salty Brine chose to set his show round this wonderful music. The first track, “Why” sums up in its lyrics, the events of his life. His show continues with references to the tracks of the record.
This is a significant show, on a stage backed up by a five-piece band including, Ben Langhorn a talented pianist and performer. There is a line of bright dresses on a rail and on comes Salty Brine dressed in a full-length evening dress. As the pictures show he deliberately acknowledges his sex with a small chin beard, the rest of him is pure showmanship.
He starts by recounting the story of Kate Chopin’s groundbreaking feminist novel The Awakening involving love and loss. At the same time and interspersed, he recounts the story of his life as a child growing up. A particular turning point is when he tells his mother he is a homosexual. Both stories progress through the show with references to Judy Garland and other divas he loves.
This is a Cabaret show plenty of glitz and sequins – also two small bubble machines. Salty can sing well and relates to the audience who all enjoyed it. At the end we are experiencing an exciting, well performed, event which if this is to your taste, you will not be disappointed.
