Delightful Children's Cooking Show

“Avo, Avocado Chop Chop Chop

Squeeze the Lime for a real good time!”

Super Chefs is a show for 4 to 8 year olds where South American cooking skills are presented in Spanish and English with song and dance.  We are introduced to the cast of three.  Valeria (Natassia Bustamante) is in charge of her kitchen and welcomes us.  Her son Manny (Juan José Galeano) is there to help with his toy “Mighty Mujer” a kind of Superwoman, which translates as Mighty Woman which has inspired an all female sporting event.  Six year old Manny wants to be a superhero. Completing the cast is Alma the grandmother (Samantha Manzur) whose role is to have her old fashioned ideas exposed as nonsense.  The first song is to “Stay young and strong and mighty”.  So to La Cucina or the Kitchen.

We start with hand sanitizer dispensed to the whole audience.  This is the start of the strong inclusivity of this show which doesn’t pull a few from the audience to participate but involves everyone.  We are going to make guacamole but first there are corn biscuits to form into a disc from a ball of dough and again everyone joins in with less than uniform results, but praise for all.

Grandmother Alma expresses her sexist view that a boy’s place is not in the kitchen.  Try telling that to Michelin’s top chefs! She is firmly corrected by Valeria and Manny.  We have great fun with the Guacamole ingredients, avocado, tomato, lime and salt with giant soft versions lobbed into the audience and passed around with a salsa rhythm song about these recipe items.  There is also dance and involving arm actions.

There is a dish Brigadeiros, originally from Brazil, which needs cocoa powder which Alma forgets to buy, but instead of her being told off, we hear that if we make a mistake, we should say we are sorry and ask for help.

I really admired the cast at involving the children and the appearance of Mighty Mujer herself is a highlight and there was plenty to entertain parents as well in the 55 minute run time. It was also for me a lesson in Spanish. At the end we were all invited to try the guacamole which was of course delicious.

Well done to the Super Chef Team with their motto, “Saving the World One Dish at a Time.”
