A Tribute to Michael Jackson's Music and Dance
“I’m starting with the man in the mirror
I’m asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make a change.”
Lyric from The Man in the Mirror

We have Lynne Nottage’s show MJ the Musical about Michael Jackson celebrating its first year at the Prince Edward Theatre in London but for all those Michael Jackson fans who can’t get to London, here is Man in the Mirror. This is a tribute show starring CJ as Michael Jackson who has been recreating Michael Jackson’s songs and dance for 15 years and is produced by entertainers. I saw it in Golders Green for one night only but on the tour it will appear from Dunfermline to Fareham and a score of places inbetween (see tour dates below).
The softness of Michael Jackson’s almost childlike speaking voice came home to me when watching the Netflix documentary The Greatest Night in Pop. Rehearsing with Lionel Ritchie, Jackson singing his lyrics “We are the world, We are the children” with his angelic voice is heart rending. This shows the development of America’s USA for Africa initiative with the single “We Are the World”. Jackson came across as quiet and self-effacing, gentle and kind and that is the image of him I want to keep in my heart.

CJ’s voice isn’t quite as beautiful as Michael’s but the rest of his performance is top notch. Man in the Mirror’s four piece band led by Music Director Nic Southwood are in support with four dancers led by Holly Harrison who is also the choreographer. The visuals here are dominated by the solo figure of CJ as Michael Jackson and there is sensational lighting, back drop video and onstage fireworks.
Michael Jackson has a huge backlist but I hope your favourites will be there. It is so nice to see these live onstage and not controlled by a company owning the rights. “Bad”, “Billie Jean”, “Earth Song” and “Man in the Mirror” are mine.
The first song is “Bad” with CJ wearing one white glove and showing us Jackson’s iconic dance steps. A red lit backdrop will see marching soldiers with stamping in the dance moves and video of a helicopter. In a gold shirt, CJ will sing, “Wanna Be, Startin’ Somethin’ ” with fantastic footwork and showing off his white socks. CJ tells us that “Michael was the greatest entertainer who ever walked on earth”. There is purple lighting and silver beams of spot light for “Just Another Part of Me” with more slidey shoes footwork.

The white Panama and white jacket with a black armband signal the arrival of “Smooth Criminal” with that amazing, gravity defying lean forward. The innovative choreography is all sharp elbows, with his hand to head looking down. This dance is explosive with the four supporting dancers behind him. A medley of Jackson Five hits has the dancers wearing Afro wigs as if they were Michael’s older brothers. During “Black or White” CJ will tour the stalls greeting audience members in costume.
There is a “Dirty Diana” sequence which Michael Jackson offered to leave out of the London concert which Princess Diana was due to attend until she said that song was one of her favourites. There is more – the brilliant “Billie Jean” , the evocative and visionary “ Earth Song”, a curtain call and the audience demanding the show’s title song. A memorable night!
