Dining at Faulty Towers

I know nothing, Mr Faulty!

In Buster Keaton’s glorious Sherlock Junior (1924) an ‘ordinary’ fellow steps out of real life into a movie and changes cinema forever. Faulty Towers reverses the transition, releasing characters from John Cleese and Connie Booth’s much-loved TV comedy classic into the ‘real’ world of this smart hotel dining room.

Well, it releases three of the original characters, who are called Basil (Rob Langston), Sybil (Rebecca Norris) and Manuel (Ben Hood), to avoid confusion. And for the Guests in The President Hotel, Guilford Street, WC1 they are very much in the flesh. Which will be most of the fun.

For the next two hours we are treated to displays of seething bad temper, rudeness and violence from Basil. Serious flirting from Sybil. And unrelenting, beyond the point of tedious, verbal incomprehension from Manuel.

An earlier production of this show referred directly to the use of plot lines from the TV broadcasts. But these, apart from Basil’s attempt to disguise his gambling winnings from Sybil, Manuel’s sabotage, and his potentially lethal pet, are largely dispensed with in the version at the President Hotel in Guilford Street, WC1.

But, so many people still love this show, whether contemporaries or new fans, that every table in the dining room of the President is packed.

It must be hard enough to run a large dining room without adding the burden of a theatrical production. Especially since a real three course meal is served to the many guests in the course of the show. (And the food is very decent too, with a vegetarian option. Though you have to buy your own liquid refreshments.)

None the less, the show is very slick due to a very capable cast and crew. And great fun is had by all. Yet those with longer memories might miss not only the brilliant writing of the longer format of the original TV series, but also the other hotel guests and guest stars who support the four central characters (Basil, Sibyl, Manuel and Polly the maid). And occasionally even up-stage them. Dr Price’s (Geoffrey Palmer) imperious but doomed cry, “I’m a doctor and I want my sausages!” will forever ring in the memory.

For me that is one of the great Sitcom lines. Along with Rodney in “Only Fools and Horses” wailing, “You ran guns during the Spanish Civil War, Grand Dad!” and Grand Dad’s plaintive reply “It’s the best time, Rodney.”

Along with the captured U-Boat Commander in “Dad’s Army” who demands to know the arresting Private’s surname. Only to hear Captain Mainwaring’s barked order, “Don’t tell him, Pike!”

Still, here we are. And the possibility that at any moment Basil or Sybil might pop up behind our chair and adore or insult you adds a very strong spice to the evening. Even if we do tire of Basil’s barked orders or Manuel’s fractured English incomprehension. At least we are spared Sybil’s never-funny-in-the-first-place-but-unworthy-of-her gag about Manuel “He’s from Barcelona.” But we do have a brilliant example of connubial Basil/Sybil cross-talking to cherish.

As well as Manuel’s pet Rat, although sadly he doesn’t serenade it with Aznavour’s “She”. There is also Basil’s stuffed fish which returns the compliment in a way that will probably prevent this show from being a children’s classic.

And the Diners/Audience love it. One guest at our table says he has seen the show 7 times. Though we don’t find out in which versions, he certainly has come back for more.

As will others, I’m sure.
