Most deserving show for an Award

“This isn’t a play, it’s a mess”

Some might say this experimental show is exactly what the Edinburgh Fringe should be about and perhaps they’re right. The performers are part of IN BED WITH MY BROTHER, a group that takes its name from Philosophy of the World, the cult album by The Shaggs, often dubbed the “best worst band of all time.” The original band consisted of the three Wiggin sisters—Dot, Betty, and Helen—who were formed in 1960s New Hampshire under the control of their domineering father, Austin. In this production, the sisters are portrayed by Nora Alexander, Dora Lynn, and Kat Cory.

The group has appeared at the Fringe in previous years, but this time they’ve brought along actor Nigel Barrett to play the stage manager you can tell this by his tool belt. Throughout the performance, pounding rock music sets the tone.

Before the curtain rises, the three women address the audience directly. They explain that in previous years their work was messy, chaotic, and involved getting their tits out. This time, they promise a proper biographical three-Act play. True to their word, a curtain above the stage projects notes indicating what’s happening and which Act is underway.

The story, such as it is, follows the three sisters, who are imprisoned by their father in a basement to practice their lacking musical skills. Periodically, the screen instructs them to perform calisthenics, which they do with impressive energy and sweat.

Their father arranges for them to perform at a concert in the town of Fremont, where the audience (us) are given cans of Coke to express appreciation, or lack thereof, by throwing them at the stage.

As the acts progress, the show becomes increasingly anarchic. The actor playing the stage manager is repeatedly beaten up and stripped of his tool belt. Later, he loses three T-shirts to the cast and may not survive the ordeal.

Act Three brings the chaos to a climax. Yes, they do take their tops off. A loud drum kit is assembled and played, one performer delivers a screaming philosophical diatribe about the shooting of Andy Warhol, and another writes indecipherable truths on blackboards in what becomes a surreal lecture hall.

This is a show that puts many others to shame with its bold experimental comedy and relentless energy. The audience loved it: exactly the kind of daring work Summerhall is known for.  Theatrevibe the site that doesn’t do stars, awards Philosophy of the World, Five Fringe Festival (FFS) anarchic stars.
