The Jabber to Cure Ebola?

Someone asks,  “Will the universal vaccine kill you?”

Dr Judy replies, “This isn’t the NHS!”

I really do wonder why people bother with overpriced West End theatre when there are so many smaller London venues providing excellence at value prices?  A case in point is The Tabard Theatre in Chiswick which is currently showing a wonderfully written satire based on the Pharmaceutical Industry, One Jab Cures All.  The premise is that one small research company has discovered a drug that will cure everything physical leaving only Alzheimers, Depression and Psychological based illness uncured.

Leading the research is Dr Max (Rob Pomfret) who wants his research to be available to all. Opposing this philanthropic idea is Dr Judy (Sophie Mackall) who sees the financial possibility of such a life changing drug and wants to keep the discovery secret.  Dr Max, full of red faced excitement, has the encouraging results from Russian guinea pigs, some of whom were children.  Is this as reliable as using asylum seeker subjects, presumably offering themselves in return for immigration related concessions?

Laced into this drama are myriad and witty one liners and riffs which cannot help but make you laugh out loud and keep you smiling throughout.  As Max and Judy speculate on their future Nobel prize and the dramatized Netflix series about their discovery, they try to work out which famous actors will play them.  “Sheridan Smith,” suggests Max for Judy, only for Judy to frown at the choice of someone less skinny than she is.  These funny situations flesh out the personalities of the four main characters to our delight.  I loved the hate crime alert on the tannoy as a concept!

The other two characters are Felicity, Max’s teenage daughter (Lauren Whitehill) who is naturally rebellious and the lab technician Vic (Jay Warn) who is in a wheelchair and who falls for Felicity.  Cue a melodramatic romance.

Overseeing the research company is the unseen Dr Scholtz whom Dr Max feels has a list of well known celebrities who should get first pick at the drug in return for mega-bucks.  There are physical jokes too, the sinister people in bio hazard suits lurking in the background or when Vic’s wheelchair is incapacitated by a floor mop judiciously placed through the wheel spokes of his chair.  Vic has a back story as a successful sperm donor because of his double first from Trinity College, Cambridge.

The narrative is nicely set up with the differing themes coming together.  All is played on Alice Carroll’s pristine set with post industrial, silver ventilation ducting hoses, stainless steel tables, cabinets of records and a computer work station.  Director Matthew Parker keeps our attention so we can enjoy writer Lloyd Evans’ creative humour.  Under the fresh comedy are serious points about the ethics of the pharmaceutical industry but don’t miss this clever satire from the Lumbago Theatre Company.
