Rambert Exhilarating Dance at Sadler's Wells

“On a gathering storm comes
 a tall handsome man

In a dusty black coat with a red right hand,”

Rambert has a well-deserved reputation for presenting dance of the highest standard, as does Sadler’s Wells for selecting exciting and original productions and this is no exception.

For those familiar with the television series, the storyline will be recognisable. Seeing it interpreted through dance is truly extraordinary. The recreation of the 1920s in dance is mesmerizing and I found it as convincing as the immersive Peaky Blinders-The Rise seen in Camden in 2022 but fuller of feeling and wonder.  It is the athleticism of the dance which engages us and the chosen music using the Nick Cave song used in the series.

This dance show is written by Steven Knight, the writer of the BBC’s series and the story here ends at the end of Series Four.  Series Six is the last one to be viewed and while there won’t be a seventh season of the BBC series Peaky Blinders, the story of the Shelby family will continue in a feature-length film being made now. Additionally, the show’s creator, Steven Knight, has hinted at the possibility of future television series set in the Peaky Blinders world.  Please can Rambert mount another staged dance version in future?

Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby  begins at the end of the First World War, with everyone dressed in khaki. The officer’s role is to lead the men into battle and to die; the NCO’s role is to lead them and survive. Thomas Shelby (Conor Kerrigan) leads a tunnelling squad in the trenches with soldiers including his elder brother Arthur Shelby (Dylan Tedaldi).  It’s likely that these men, mostly from the Birmingham area, served in the same regiment: “Those who join together will fight together.”  Moi Tran’s set has tunnels on different levels for dancers to emerge from and dig into.  The survivors of this war say that they are not among the dead but they are dead inside.

A scene set in a factory illustrates the tedium of scarce employment after the war.  After demobilization, unemployment becomes the norm, and the men turn to the one they trust: Tommy Shelby. Tommy starts his own business which is organized crime.  The uniform of his new life includes the iconic Baker’s Boy cap, razor blades sewn into the peak – his wartime unit now repurposed for gang life and employment.  And the razors giving the title Peaky Blinders.  A scene using Fairground Gallopers cleverly alludes to the Shelby involvement in gambling on horse racing.

Some try to reintegrate into normal society. Grace (Naya Lovell) is recruited by the police to infiltrate the Shelby gang but falls in love with him. Naya Lovell’s expressive movement shows her growing affection for him. Tommy even marries Grace but the past catches up with him: the murder of gang rival, Changretta (Alessio Corallo) spurring Changretta’s widow (Angélique Blasco) into revenge with the only action that can really hurt Thomas Shelby. The Blood Wedding.

Widowed, he turns to the oblivion of opium. Polly Gray (Simone Damberg Würtz) his father’s much younger sister is a pivotal figure.  He is ultimately saved by those who care for him, although they also need him to lead the gang once more. There are scenes in a night club with showgirls dressed in attractive silks and shiny fabrics.  Another scene dresses men and women in period underwear as we understand the active erotic lives of the gang interpreted beautifully as only dance can.

There are two alternating casts and I have reviewed here Cast A but listed all dancers below.  Natasha Chivers’ lighting is highly atmospheric. Steven Knight and Benoit Swan Pouffer have created an unsurpassed work of art.

The story is told through brilliant dance, supported by an outstanding musical score. It makes one wonder why dance hasn’t yet captured a broader audience but this show is bound to bring converts. As a theatrical experience, this production stands among the best shows in London but there is only a week left to see it.   Five shining stars from Theatrevibe the site that doesn’t do stars!
