For those conspiracy minded there are clear lines leading towards what happens to the Quilters and their baby and cat. On press night we were given a text wrapped in an anonymous brown, sealed wrapper with CONFIDENTIAL rubber stamped on the envelope. “Intriguing” I thought. Having seen it, is my disbelief lifted? Maybe.

REVIEW: What If If Only, Royal Court Jerwood Downstairs (2021)

Even without Andy getting up to his paradoxical tricks, quarter-hours have not latterly had a good press, vis "un mauvais quart d'heure".  Lasting 17 minutes straight through, What If If Only - the latest piece by Caryl Churchill, is the polar opposite of "un mauvais quart d'heure".  It packs a wealth of suggestion in its brief allotted span.  And the wonder of it is that it does so with an elating lightness of touch.

Various claims are made for Is God Is  relating it to tragedy ancient and modern and the Spaghetti Western.  The earliest is Greek tragedy, dealing with issues of a finely balanced question of right and wrong, often with divine intervention.
