REVIEW: Sweat, Donmar Warehouse (2018)

Set in Reading, Pennsylvania,Sweat looks at blue collar workers in America and how after years of toiling for the same company they lose their jobs to cheaper labour, from immigrant communities within the United States, or to the residents of Mexico. Reading is a steel town and like Sheffield, in the 1997 film The Full Monty, is one which finds it is losing jobs to cheaper producers abroad. Of course what Lynn Nottage is cleverly documenting is the reason behind the political success of Donald Trump in the 2016 election with the support of blue collar Americans.

REVIEW: The Lehman Trilogy, Lyttelton Theatre (2018)

However as the first act of The Leyman Trilogy is the most brilliantly constructed piece of sublime acting and poetic writing with its rhythmic repetition, it is surely a contender for the best new play awards and Simon Russell Beale and Adam Godley for best actor.

REVIEW: Not Talking, Arcola Theatre (2018)

Mike Bartlett is well on his way to becoming established as our best living British playwright. I see only Tom Stoppard as his competition. Twelve years ago, this was his first play, not published until 2011 by Methuen as a part of the first collection of Mike Bartlett plays but Not Talking had never been produced onstage until James Hillier of Defibrillator proposed it.
