REVIEW: Cruise, Duchess Theatre (2021) now showing at the Apollo (2022)

He is taken in by an American, Fat Sandy who "lived for cottaging and took me under his bingo wing." Later he lives with twins, Jason and Jacob until Jack finds the hedonistic lifestyle they lead of promiscuous sex with innumerable partners, disruptive and intrusive. All the gay bars, pubs and restaurants of old Soho are recalled like a travelogue.

Love, anger and activism during the 1980s AIDS crisis. A new virus is infecting gay men across New York City. As the rising death toll is ignored by government and the medical establishment, fear and confusion turns to rage and division. Using this anger, writer and activist Ned Weeks sets out to unite the community in their fight for recognition and right to survive.

Kevin Elyot was commissioned to write a new play for Hampstead which was My Night With Reg which was turned down, presumably by, the then, Artistic Director at Hampstead, Jenny Topper. Not something you want to put on your cv! Stephen Daldry had just taken over as Artistic Director at the Royal Court and he snapped up My Night With Reg, asked Roger Michell to direct and cast David Bamber as Guy, Anthony Calf as John, the ebullient John Sessions as Daniel, and Joe Duttine as Eric.
